Kentucky Auto Insurance

Kentucky is a “Choice No Fault” state. This means that motorists can choose between the traditional “Tort Liability” insurance system or the “No Fault” auto insurance system.

Tort Liability - means that there are no restrictions on lawsuits. Therefore, a policyholder “at fault” in an accident can be sued by the other driver and the other driver’s passengers for the pain and suffering as well as out-of-pocket expenses such as medical costs.

No fault Insurance - means that every driver is required to purchase Personal Injury Protection, PIP, in which the driver’s or policy holder’s (“first party”) insurance company covers non-catastrophic injury-related expenses and associated costs as a result of an accident regardless who is “at fault.” This insures that every motorist will receive immediate medical attention. Also, this limits a driver from suing or being sued for damages as a result of an accident in most cases. However, based on the severity of the accident/injury or monetary amount, if you are at fault you may be subject to a lawsuit for damages.

Required Minimum Coverage - 25/50/10. $25,000 for injury liability for one person in an accident, $50,000 for all injuries in any one accident, and $10,000 for property damage in an accident.

Mandatory Kentucky Auto Insurance Coverage - PIP (No Fault) policy, Property Damage Liability policy, and Bodily Injury Liability policy

Proof of Kentuck Auto Insurance - is required. Motorist must submit an entire list of policy coverage in effect

Important Kentucky Auto Insurance Laws!

Penalty for Failure to Comply - if you operate or allow another to operate your vehicle without auto insurance meeting state requirements this may result in registration revocation, a $50 fine, and up to 90 days in jail. However, this may be subject to your record and number of offenses.

Non-Seatbelt Use
You can not be pulled over for non-seat belt use. However, if you are pulled over for another infraction you may receive a $25 penalty for all seats not in compliance.
